Book Six
I guess it's unnecessary to mention the name of this book, but for someone who's been away from this planet for the past several years (and to get any visitors who may google for this book!), I'm talking abt Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
A lot of the suspense is missing in this book and the story even drags in parts. Love seems to be playing too much of a role in Hogwarts, with even Dumbledore frequently resorting to cliches like "Love makes the world go around" or something to that effect. I thought Sirius dying in book 5 was incredibly sad, and I expected to feel the same way after this book. But somehow, I think we've become too used to her killing off characters, so all I felt this time was numbness. There were lots of complications and there are still unexplained issues. At this rate I wonder if all will be cleared up by the time the last book comes along. Flashes of Rowling's sense of humour are retained here and there, but not nearly enough. There were some hilarious trademark Rowling inventions, such as a potion that brings luck called Felix Felicis and Fred and George's gag called U-No-Poo (like You-Know-Who).
All in all I was disappointed by this book. I'm not even sure I can re-read it, while I know that isn't the case with any of the other Potter books.
And I'm dying to include spoilers!

Umm..Can I borrow the book!?
i felt the exact same way abt the book! the harry-ginny romance was very badly put - the creature within him and all that. pathetic attempt at giving harry a love life..
my first time here.
dont you think all the potter books have been .. well..er...silly?
Sure Prashanth, you can borrow it. And Divya, YES! The love life thing bored me. And hey genius, I thought the previous books were entertaining. What did you find silly in them?
"what did you find silly"
1.ppl flying on broomsticks?
2.too much hype?
3.20+ year olds standing in queue to get a copy?
my list of what i found silly
One of the few negative reviews I've read. Don't know what to think. Maybe I should just read and see for myself.. ;-)
Well if Tolkien can get away with talking trees then people flying on broomsticks isn't so bad! But I agree with you about the excessive hype, ittiam. And leon, my review reflected my disappointment with the book as compared to the rest of the series. As a stand-alone concept maybe it isn't so bad.. Just maybe
one of the funny things abt the book release was the long queue at midnight at most bookstores! i dont think i have seen such a queue at many of our government ration shops!!
I think the publishers and bookstores(more than anyone else) went overboard with the hype.
'A voice of dissent', asserts assenter.
I havent read this book yet. Right now still stuck in Deception Point.
However, after reading reviews about the new release of Harry....I dont know whether I'll be interested to read it anymore :(
Came via Orkut :D
Greetz!!
@Su: Totally agree that the hype is getting way out of hand.
@writetrack: Huh?!
@arz00n: I was unable to plough through Deception Point. For some reason found it very boring. Good luck :)
i see uv changed ur blog layout.. nice to see it has a touch of pink!!! All the guys i know critisizing me for using pink in my tag board. i dont see whats so rotten abt pink..

Um, why exactly is that jayaram comment here?
Harry Potter.
Interesting write up.
Do visit my blog.
Agree that the book didnt live up to expec, and the 'snogging' was only but a bad attempt at portrayin love lives :)). lol.. and yeah, i read this book by ursula leguin, and it crossed my mind that western fantasy perhaps, is too short of ideas..too many similarities b/w HP, LOTR, earthsea etc..particularly with regard to the settings they create...dont you think so?
@abberanti thanks! I will check out your blog.
@shankar I've never read or heard of Ursula Leguin. I haven't read a great deal of fantasy-type books. I did like CS Lewis a lot as a kid. Sadly no one reads about Narnia any more
The book really disappointed me.Acc to me "Azkaban" is the best!!
Absolutely! While parts of the other books were really good, there was no other book in the series as interesting as Azkaban!
HBP answered some of the important questions about origins of Voldy and i think it was interestingly written. The momentum is slow till the final pages but it gathers a lot of it in the final few pages. i didnt think Harry and ginny would get together but i thought it was written nicely. Anyway, wait for another couple of years begins.
On some site, it was mentioned that JKR said harry would get a new pet sometime. I guess we know who the pet will be. Will not reveal here though for the sake of spoilers.
I agree that there were parts where Rowling's writing was boring, and long-winded.
The last part of the book was great. The snogging parts were, well, good. Except for Lavender Brown *urk*.
I love Peeves, I wish we could have more of him. They excluded him in the movies, the humorless punks! *blows a wet raspberry at the directors*
I love the part in HP6 when Peeves refuses to allow girls and boys into a room, unless they set their pants on fire. HAHAHAHAHA. And the closing swipe of Harry Potter Five all but belonged to Peeves, who chased Umbridge from the hallowed halls of Hogwarts with McGonagall's walking stick.
*overcome with respect and reverence*
hi anjana,
i thought the sixth book was very well written ,mainly coz , its was more serious , and not the kiddish sorta way the other books were written . It didn't have many loopholes and was straight in its narrative.
The love life was indeed boring , it could have been wriiten in a better way , but overrall the book was different than the rest. True, its not the same as when Sirius died , but its also true that that its leaves an inevitable feeling of dread about what's she's gonna write next .And the plot for the next book is already revealed. So i think that this book was a really good one.
